outdoor entertainment …. here we come!
It is that time, finally, to gear up your outdoor space and prepare for entertaining. No matter what size space you may have outside, there are so many ways to make it work for your gatherings of eating and cock-tailing. This space is calling my name, outdoor fireplace- a must have, comfy lounge area – absolutely, serving cart- for sure. Remember to be creative with your furnishings…. you can easily make lounges and settees with found boxes / crates and outdoor cushions to make more interesting seating arrangements – nothing like a sunken living room outdoors! Mix modern with vintage – sleek dining chairs and wicker side tables for starters.

While the space is still evolving (it never really stops, honestly) we’re ready to get sales back up and running! So come see us! We’ve missed you so. Just a reminder on our hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11-6pm, Sunday 11-5pm. And don’t forget we’re having a kick-ass party on the 31st to christen our new digs!
Here’s a few teaser shots of what we’ve been up to! That’s David Sprecher creating the most intricate, and rather piercing I might add, installation out of razor blades. I know, right?! Our new space has so much light I can only imagine the patterns it casts as it flickers across these.

Though the shop & studio are a dizzying display of boxes and installation crap, oh, everywhere, our eyes are on the prize. Here’s some of the inspiration behind the new space’s concept, which is currently in production. One day, very soon, we’ll unveil. Just a reminder to everyone, our new address is just across the street at 1818 (in the space where our friends Painted Lady used to be – we’ve pulled a Trading Spaces style move).
Regular business hours will resume May 19th.
Catch you on the filp! Keep popping back in for more details as they evolve!

Only four more days until Design Harvest starts! And even though the store is in complete disarray today (we’re loading in SO much delicious brand-new furniture which means complete re-styling) I can’t but help but nerd out all the awesome talent that’s participating in the festivities. Like Dock 6, a collective of furniture designers, makers & fabricators. Um, hot DAMN their work is stellar. Clean modern lines with subtle nods to Dutch design plus cheeky, surprising details. Nicely done, fellas.
Other makers who are coming into set-up shop include Strand Design, Morlen Sinoway, Verde Design Studio, Unison Home, New Breed Furniture, and Nate Berkus Associates. Check the Design Harvest site for the full line-up, including all the food trucks too.
Are you ready?! We are! Well, we WILL be anyway, in only a few more days…

Reluctant as ever to let summer go, the promise of Design Harvest totally makes up for the shorter, crisper days. And it’s almost here! In just two weeks, October 1st and 2nd, we are taking over Grand Ave with a home-hoedown. Visit our giant block-long tent full of over 40 antique & vintage dealers, and loads of modern handmade furniture-makers. Grab yourself a mug of cider (or even something stronger if you like) and peruse the wares. Have a hay ride, pick up a pumpkin at Grand Street Gardens, and let The Hideout’s musical stylings fill your ears with classic bluegrass, folk, and blues tunes. Fall, we love you.
Up next: we’ll spotlight some of this year’s hot-hot-hot vendors.

Wow, wow, wow. Despite the small number of photos, I think this *might* have been the most-well attended design street festival ever. I mean, I ran into an old, old boss from four years ago which was pretty amazing. The most perfect weather, live music, drinks, and food in the streets. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and said hello, it’s only too bad the trucks are so tiny that we can’t have everyone in there all at once!

Morlen Sinoway’s Guerilla Box Truck show is likely my best-loved Chicago summer street festival. A surprising challenge is given to the participants: each must rent a moving truck to display their wares. No surprise that tasking such a thing to a bunch of interior designers & furniture makers will produce some pretty interesting results. Sure they look like U-hauls on the outside, but each is a unique mini-wonderland of curiosities inside.
Angela’s been developing a little shop in a box with products made specifically for this event. Keep your eyes peeled for our truck’s sign:

Other participants include Strand Design, Indo Projects, Object Design League, various design students from schools all over the city, and we even have makers joining us this year from Portland and Atlanta!
One night only:
Tuesday June 14th, 5:30-9:30pm
1052 W. Fulton Market
Free!
More sneak peeks coming from us soon…

The store smells like hairspray today and there’s Amazon-beautiful models gliding around in various states of dress. Are the two related? Most definitely. Heather’s shooting our Vignettes for the event & Design Bureau magazine.
And we are open still for regular business too. So come see us, especially if you can’t come to the actual event, the Vignettes will be up for another two weeks!

It’s teaser time friendly friends! Our next event is a-brewing! We’re still in major worker-bee planning mode, but here’s a taste. What IS it you ask? Why, it’s an in-store collab with my design-crush Design Bureau magazine celebrating the art of the vignette. Opens April 28th.
Keep your eyes on the prize folks, this ‘uns gonna be huge. More soon!
