Angela! What would you do?

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

I am taking on quick “help outs” for those of you who have a vintage or antique piece of furniture that you want to give new life to, and need help conceptualizing the new and improved.

Sarah has a 50′s rocker / lounger that is in need of new foam and fabric, and possibly some work on the springs. This piece has it’s own personality, the shapes and details make it what it is, so we don’t want to mess with those two characteristics.  I love the blue headrest, armrests and bottom trim, I would like to see this re-upholstered with yummy buttery dark blue leather (if it is in the budget). If not there are some surprisingly amazing vinyls out there in the world.

I would like this piece to go more monochromatic, so that it is less “cute” – lets make this chair dapper and a little more serious. I have pulled a super sexy wool upholstery fabric, in gray and white.  My latest obsession is grids, and I love this wool grid, nice price too (make sure you order a sample first to make sure the quality is good.)

Now for the details – The body of the chair (wool grid) needs to have blind seams (meaning you don’t have piping or exposed stitching),which will give it a super clean and modern feel. For the leather areas – exposed stitching in a medium gray string would be delicious, and I could even see two to three buttons added to the seam of the headrest in the same leather. The edges of the leather should be left raw. The arms and base of the chair should be refinished in a medium tone gray. Wow, this chair is going to be super hot!

Here are a few links for the materials:

+ Gray grid fabric that I am in love with.

+ Fishman’s Fabrics, my favorite place in Chicago to visit every week or two, where there is a ton of great remnants for great prices. You do have to frequent often if you are looking for something specific /in this case ask about the suiting fabrics. Sometimes they are thick enough for upholstery and you will be sure to find a similar grid there.

Furniture Revival works hand in hand with upholsterers and do a wonderful job refinishing and repairing – this will need to be done before the piece is upholstered.

Budget:
This all depends on the state of the “innards” meaning the frame, springs, foam, etc- this is impossible for me to tell from just a photo, assuming this piece is in almost perfect shape with the exception that it needs new foam in the seat and back. With fabric, refinishing, foam and upholstery, I would say approx. $325.00 to $425.00.

Best of luck to you Sarah! Please send photos once the piece is completed!

Need some inspiration and concepts for a furniture re-do?  email : Angela at design@post27store.com, send a photo or two of the piece that needs a little love, also include a glimpse of the room where the piece will be and let me know what you are looking to do!

New in the shop: 5×7 Books

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Leo Burnett Design Director & Post Family member Alex Fuller no doubt has enough on his plate day to day, but on the side he also runs 5×7 Books, a line of small-run art publications. These delicate little books present quiet ideas in beautiful little packages, cleverly printed and assembled together. It’s the kind of object that speaks delicately at first but after a glance or two a deeper concept emerges, imprinting itself into your brain.

Ina Weise’s From Here to There is a 4-panel fold-out piece on French Newsprint and it is inspired by traveling, people, and the connections Ina’s made in her journeys.

A Painting in 31 Marks documents the decision-making process that goes into abstract painting. Two people, two colors, one painting. Artwork by Chicago screenprinting-artist duo Sonnenzimmer.

Both books are available at the shop now!

mountain home I love you.

I cannot get the Rocky Mountains out of my mind.  I came across this space in a friends vintage design book while I was in Colorado.  Let me break down my love for this space, if possible.  First, the contrast of  dark floors with the light rug, walls and furniture = yes please. The simplicity of each object yet the complexity of textures = yes, yes, please.  And the view…. need I say more?

colorado – i miss you already.

Oh Denver. Oh Colorado, Oh Rocky Mountains…..

I made a recent visit to the mile high city to help a dear friend get her house all gussied up.  My love for Denver and especially Colorado grew intensely. The first day was all about antiquing and thrifting to find a list of items to pull her living room together.  An inspiration trip, I was “instagram”ming the heck out of everything. Traveling is such a visual venture, we should all do more of it. (Follow me on Instagram – afinney27)

So, DAY ONE was spent on Broadway Ave, and I have listed out a few of the many stops and shops we ventured upon.

Gutterpup- An interesting little shop with total edge and true vintage vibe.

Sufi Rug - Entering into Sufi Rugs literally felt like I had teleported to another world. Stacks and stacks of the most luscious navajo and kilim rugs. The family who ran the business gave us a tour of their products and living area in the back of the shop. I was literally  drooling over 200 year old camel bags, doorway trims, and floor cushion covers.

Packrat Antiques - Although there are tons of bad reviews of this shop on yelp, this is my favorite place to view collections and vignettes of items. One of my favorite shops ever, antique shop meets musuem, goods from globes, to medical tools, to rock collections.

Artsmyths – Well, you know,  everyone needs a hand made leather mask, right? Well I sure thought so, this place was off the charts. The best for your masquerade party masks, the owners are amazing, and you can watch the studio at work painting leather masks and corsets… Now I just need a reason to wear my new mask! Post 27 is planning on conjuring up a line of masks for Halloween 2013!

Vintage Volvos – need I say more? They are everywhere in Denver.

DAY TWO – Rocky Mountain National Park – so much inspiration from our hike that I am bubbling over and planning a trip to go back in the summer months.

My recommendation, GO, a quick flight and so much to do besides shop, to name a few – hiking, biking, skiing, all so close.

Moving – yes, Moving!

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

This. Is going to be huge. We’re moving! Yes! It is official. Starting May 1st we are packing up the shop and setting up camp across the street! For us this means a smarter, more evolved & edited space, with less overhead so we can focus more on designing interiors and products. Did I say how excited we are? It’s all buzzy and fluttery over here.

And you know what else this means?! Oh, yeah: SALE. Help us lighten our load! April 17th, all day we’ll be marking down majorly. The more you buy, the less we have to move – everyone wins! And then once we get back up and running we’re having a grand féte to celebrate our hard work & spiffed up digs. Get yourself ready, it’s on May 31st.

At the moment we’re focusing on designing the interior of the new space, one word on that: BLACK. More inspiration behind the new look heading your way soon…

Frei’s Spring 2012 Collection

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Annie’s Spring Collection is hot hot hot, and it’s coming to our shop on March 29th! I would say she’s outdone herself, but all her clothes are so incredible it’s really impossible to compare them. Surprising pops of color, whiffs of Japanese styling, and goodness gracious — is that you Frida Kahlo? I thought so. There’s no way these threads won’t turn heads, I only hope I can contain myself once I see them in real life.

Come have a toast to Frei and this fine weather we’ve been having on March 29th from 5-8pm!

spring has sprung – bring on the color

Loving the color combo here,  super simple yet graphic and not redundant.  Nothing better than a window sill filled with succulents.  Oh and we cannot overlook the white Thonet chair with green leather seat cushion = always a fan.

artwork over a pop of color

A very eye catching way to show off your collection.  This wall creates a graphic backdrop for artwork that is free and textural, the perfect juxtaposition.  Oh and not to mention the matching grandfather clock…. yes this photo is from the 70′s.
