oh the mid century department store…..

What happened to your stately interiors and the glamorous styling?  Here the mural and the up lighting steal my heart, and not to mention the modular dress display and mannequin soaring through the air.  This is the Ohrbach’s department store in LA, circa 1948.

“Does your taste run toward authentic high fashions, for the fashion markets of the world? Does an unsurpassed variety of styles intrigue you? Does a big, beautiful, air conditioned store, luxuriously designed to relax you as you shop interest you? All these are yours at Ohrbachs.” – Los Angeles Times, November 28, 1948. – Yes. Yes. and Yes.

My Favorite Things

August 30th, 2012 by Caitlin

This week my eye caught the black and white in the store.

Archer Air Superiority – We just received our order of these really great air scents. Distillery, Euro Sports Car and Hunting Lodge will add a masculine touch.

Abstract Diamond Drawing - These are hand drawn by Ina Weise. Each one is a unique interpretation of a diamond and creates interest and flow.

Building C – These handmade porcelain figures were created just down the street by the company Up In The Air Somewhere. They are great hidden storage vessels and bloom holders.

Building B – Another building shape created by Up In The Air Somewhere.  Creates shadow like shapes to contrast with your everyday objects.

Black Candle Sticks – These are beautiful shadowy candlesticks from AKMD. Hand-turned from sustainably harvested Mango wood, the Wave Candlestick draws its form from sinusoidal waves. Burned and oiled finish. Tall and medium sizes available. They don’t demand all of the attention, but there slick beauty creates the mood of a room.

In this special edition of Feature Artist, we are featuring a new item in our store, the Archer Air Superiority. These are not your typical air fresheners. Archer Air Superiority are high-end “quality room sprays” and they come in some unique scents, such as European Sports Car (new car smell from a 1970′s Maseratis), Distillery (whiffs of bourbon barrels), and Hunting Lodge. Besides the scents, these quality room spray comes in packaging that stands out from the rest, featuring bold typography and iconic graphics on a steel can.

Archer Air Superiority are available here at POST27. Or stop by our retail location to see and experience the scents.

My Favorite Things This Week

August 23rd, 2012 by Caitlin

These are the items that stick out to me this week. We are so excited to have new styles of wood bangles and to continue carrying these fantastic bookends and blob paintings!

Blob Painting – These were created by our very own leader, Angela Finney- Hoffman.  She uses different colors to create organic shapes and bright accents for any room.

Cave Bookends – Hand crafted by our friend Garth Borovicka these bookends come with caves (pictured here),  without caves and with a snowscape.

Sean Duffy Book - From the Front 40 Press collection this is series 2 featuring the sculpture and installation work of artist Sean Duffy.

Tiny Bank Globe – This is a great little guy to start saving your pennies in. Stylish and useful in more then one way.  Save those pennies for a rainy day.

Wood Bangles – These are some new styles of the bangles that our friend Robert Jeffries  hand carves in his Chicago workshop. We are super excited about his new work. 4 bracelets are featured here, but there are many more!

Today, we introduce Chicago’s own furniture designer Carson Maddox, along with his Element Barstool that is available here now at POST27.

Inspired by the combination of modern material and industrial processes of mid-century modern designs, Maddox opened his studio, Carson Maddox Studios in 1996. He has designed  and built everything from credenzas to end tables, bed frames to stools and chairs through his mastery of metal and wood. He also creates unique custom pieces for clients to suit their individual needs as our design studio is currently working with him for several custom furniture and lighting pieces for both residential and commercial interior projects. Lastly, Maddox is one of the original founders of Dock 6, a collective of independent designers, furniture-makers, and fabricators that focus on creating well-designed products for everyone.

Russell Wright : You are amazing!

I just bought the Russell Wright’s  book Guide to Easier Living, which is a must have addition to your library. Yet another interior and object design genius from yesteryear. Every detail, color, shape and texture are so right on. Incorporating natural elements into a successful interior to this degree is mind blowing.

Wright’s Manitoga Studio and Residence is chock full of so much inspiration, I am at a loss for words… check it out.

“Wright built a house and studio directly into the side of the quarry, collectively referred to as “Dragon Rock.” Manitoga, which means “place of great spirit,” is an integrated landscape encompassing the house, studio, and grounds, and was Wright’s residence until his death in 1976. ” - source World Monument Fund.

Yes, I would move in right now….

observed : the envelope interior

August 17th, 2012 by Angela

my love for pattern…..

..is luckily fed by many different outlets, including everyday objects such as the envelopes that bills arrive in. (As you can see from our updated background here) Most of these patterns are original to the 1950′s and were hand drawn. I have an evergrowing collection, soon to be used as a wall treatments or something of the like.  I did a little bit of research on the history  and found out they have never been patented so they continue to be used many years later. Cool. “These later came into prominence in the 50s and 60′s. Companies like Sears, Montgomery Ward, ATT, Magazine Publishers, and the like all used security tints and other devices on their envelopes on the inside. No one has ever cataloged, patented or copywrited these markings so they evolved through standard usage. ” – as researched by Maynard H. Benjamin, the president and CEO of the Envelopes Manufacturers Association.

Good stuff, you should collect, at least wrap presents in them….

Janet Ecklebarger is a long-time friend of the POST27 and designs under the name Glean Design. She creates “conversational accessories for the home and body as well as costumes for spectacle.” All her accessories are created with found objects, and are handmade with great detail and care. She loves to create things that people could wear.

And an extra fun fact: she prepares income tax returns for 3 months out of the year when she is not making unique and one of a kind accessories or costumes. Now that’s some skill set.
